How Otoplasty Fixes the Problem:
This ear surgery modifies the position, size and/or shape of your ears in order to give them a more pleasant, natural look in relation to your other features.
What to Expect:
An incision is made at the back of the ear that allows access to the cartilage where the fold is to be created. After making markings in the cartilage, stitches are placed through the back of the ear cartilage without going all the way through the front of the ear. After a series of these sutures are placed, they are tied down, thus creating a folding of the ear to create the normal contour. The fold can be more or less severe, depending on how tightly the stitches are tied down. If the bowl (concha) of the ear needs to be tilted back, it is done at this time. Any adjustments to the earlobe are made, and the skin is then closed with a self-absorbing suture. A lightly compressive ear dressing is placed and your head is wrapped to hold it in place.
What You Will Notice:
Your newly reshaped ears will bring more balance and symmetry to your face. Otoplasty usually leaves a faint scar behind the ear that will fade in time. Most adults will be able to return to work after about 2 days; children can go back to school after about a week. Hurtful nicknames no longer apply!
