Traditional Liposuction
Liposuction was introduced in the U.S. in the late 70’s. Since that time, liposuction has grown to become one of the top three cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States for both men and women. In 2018, nearly 260,000 liposuction procedures were performed in the U.S.1
Traditional suction-assisted lipoplasty (liposuction) has been used for many years. It has advantages in comparison with other technologies. With the traditional procedure, the fat is typically suctioned under general anesthesia, allowing the physician to remove larger areas of fat. The disadvantage is that downtime is longer, with soreness for several days.
At Roberts Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Lipton performs traditional liposuction procedures. Dr. Lipton is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. For all other patients, Dr. Roberts performs a fine cannula tumescent liposuction procedure. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia, with cannulas that are so small, it doesn’t require stitches after the procedure. Downtime is typically just a day or two (from regular non-strenuous activities). Fine cannula liposuction is great for small pockets of stubborn fat that diet and exercise just won’t get rid of./p>
Liposuction is not intended for weight-loss. Individuals who are obese, or have a lot of intra-abdominal fat (fat that you cannot grab), or whose weight is continuing to increase are not typically the best candidates for liposuction. If you have an auto-immune disorder or other serious medical condition, then you might might not be a good candidate. Also, if you are seeking to address cellulite specifically, or have only loose skin without much fat, or if you do not have realistic expectations, then you may not be a great candidate, as well.
